The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced funding for research proposals from Pak faculty members of public and private universities under the Grand Challenge Fund (GCF). The last date to submit the proposals is 7th February 2020.
Grand Challenge Fund is an important element of the Higher Education Development supported by the World Bank and implemented by HEC. This fund helps in promoting research excellence in strategic sectors of the economy. Selected institutions are provided the funds on the basis of the competitive, peer-reviewed evaluation of proposals.
This will support mega multi-sectoral and multi-dimensional research projects. It is expected that successful GCF projects will be collaborative in scope that will have research teams who will cooperate in order to accelerate research progress for societal impact.
The focus of the fund will be to support research in priority areas. Every year 25 grants will be awarded for three years. The Individual Grant Value range will be from Rs. 15 million to Rs. 225 million.
Those eligible to apply for the grant are lead principal investigators who will be university faculty members from research-intensive institutions.
The project team might include a consortium of faculty members from multiple university departments and/or multiple universities, private sector participants and also international partners. The global collaborations are encouraged when the international partner brings a unique added value to the project team.
The head of higher education institutions, Offices of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization, or Directorates of Research will endorse the proposals from academia or faculty members. The submission must be from HEC online portal eportal.hec.gov.pk.
