The case hearing about the blocking of unregistered mobile phones by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) recently occurred at the Islamabad High Court (IHC). The court has given a comprehensive order on the deadline for blocking the unregistered mobile phones.
The HC has ordered PTA that it must take the decision regarding the unregistered mobile phones within 30days. A lawyer representing mobile firms said that he had forwarded a letter to the PTA, but they did not receive any response.
Earlier, Justice Athar Minallah of the Islamabad High Court conducted the hearing of the case and had mentioned that the decision of the mobile phone operators is right and that PTA should work for resolving the issue on immediate basis.
As for now, the court has said that the petition is against PTA and is premature and directed that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority should decide on the fate of the unregistered phones within the above-mentioned time.
The IHC bench has summarized the case after giving verdict.
The previous month, the Senate body had asked the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom to review the suggested registration system for mobile phones and the court also permitted people coming from abroad to bring more than 1 personal use mobile or bring an extra phone as a gift.
The Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) was released last year in the month of May for blocking the stolen, duplicate and smuggled phones throughout Pakistan by using the distinct IMEI of each device, besides other parameters.
