Govt to Constitute a Data Protection Authority

A Data Protection Authority is to be constituted as announced by the government of Pakistan. It will operate to reduce the misuse of data and protect the personal information of the citizens.

A ‘Personal Data Protection Act’ has been drafted by the federal cabinet that will be presented in the parliament very soon. This new act will govern the Data Protection Authority.

The leakage of personal data is threatening to the privacy and status of both the general public and celebrities. After studying the best data protection laws imposed globally, this new act has been drafted. It is ensured by the Data Protection Authority that information like phone numbers, emails, pictures, and videos of any citizen are not leaked.

Also, the Personal Data Protection Act will govern the entities that directly deal with citizens’ data like NADRA and Safe City Authorities.

The chairperson of Media Matters for Democracy Sadaf Baig said that her organization many a time wrote to the parliamentary committee over the surging incidents of data leaks, however, no response was received.

The founder of the Digital Rights Foundation, Nighat Dad said that it is essential to enforce the new law on both public and private organizations. If there are any leaks, the authorities that manage citizens’ data will also be held accountable.

In an earlier article, we informed our readers that the “Personal Data Protection Bill 2018” was drafted by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. It was proposed that those who abuse someone’s personal data will be given the punishment of 2 years in jail and will have to pay Rs 5 million in fine.
