The government of Pakistan has approved another COVID-19 vaccine under the ‘Emergency Use Permit‘, allowing a local pharmaceutical company to import and distribute Russian-made Sputnik 5 vaccine.
According to the report, an official related to this recent development said that Russia’s Sputnik Five Covid-19 vaccine has become the third emergency vaccine to be approved in the country. A meeting of the Registration Board of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) was held in which another vaccine was approved by the EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) in collaboration with the Russian Development Investment Fund, the official said.
It is to be noted that last week DRAP had allowed emergency use of Oxford University-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in Pakistan, a few days after the regulatory body The state-owned company Synopham allowed the emergency use of Covid-19 vaccine. According to information available on the Sputnik-5 website, ‘Sputnik 5 is the world’s first registered vaccine based on a well-studied human adenovirus vector platform’, adding that it is one of the top 10 on the World Health Organization’s list.
The candidate is included in the vaccine, whose clinical trials are nearing completion and mass production is about to begin. The post-registration clinical trial of Sputnik 5 in Russia involves 40,000 volunteers, in addition to the clinical trials of Sputnik 5 announced in the UAE, India, Venezuela and Belarus.
Last week, Hungary became the first European Union country to approve the Sputnik 5 coronavirus vaccine for public distribution. Shortly after, a similar decision was announced by the UAE, making it the 12th country to allow the use of the vaccine outside Russia.
