The government has taken up the first step to develop the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority. It has also approved the merger of the present support infrastructure into the new secretariat.
A top official of the Ministry of Planning and Development stated that the project director of the new CPEC Secretariat will be somebody who has a military background.
Minister for Planning and Development Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar headed it while it was approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) to merge the two ongoing projects to establish the CPEC Secretariat and an authority. The CPEC Support Project and the CPEC Centre of Excellence will be merged.

In the existing mechanism, the CPEC Support Project was headed by the deputy project director for last three years. But now the CPEC Secretariat will be headed by the minister for planning and development. The second in command will be the planning secretary.
The operational and policy matters of CPEC will be handled by the Project Director. The Project Director will be employed in the Management Pay Scale-I that is equivalent to grade-22.
There will be two wings under the project director that are the coordination and monitoring wing and the research wing.
In the official statement by the Ministry of Planning and Development, the CPEC Secretariat was not mentioned. Only a presentation was given by the deputy project director to the CDWP.
