The Senate standing committee on Finance, Revenue, and Economic Affairs on Wednesday has proposed to put a ban on all sort of night packages and lift the tax on normal Rs100 card.
Farooq Hamid Naek chaired the meeting to consider and finalize the recommendations of the committee for the Finance Bill, 2018. Senator Siraj-ul-Haq favored removing taxes on the mobile phone including advanced tax and sales tax, he also proposed banning night packages.
The committee acknowledged the suggestion for barring night packages and agreed to send the matter to the Ministry of Information Technology (MIT) and Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to review it but denied that suggestion to remove the advance tax.
Senator Muhammad Ateeq Shiekh during the meeting said, consumers, have to pay Rs28 on Rs100 card which is an unfair tax on poor people. The government should remove advance and withholding tax on Rs100 mobile cards.
Chairman Committee also said the deduction of advance tax on mobile cards is truly irrational. Senator Ateeq said he is working on bringing a comprehensive proposal on the matter, hence, it was decided to discuss the matter in detail at later date.
