The Pixel smartphone family should show Android at its best. The fresh offspring Pixel 6 and 6 Pro brings a lot of innovations. They are closely interlinked with the new tensor chip, but Google wants to bring some of them to older models as well.
The new tensor chip plays a critical role
Owners of Pixel devices know the game: if you have bought a smartphone with the Google seal, the next generation promises to be exciting again. Because many of the functions that the developers are celebrating their premiere on the new flagships may sooner or later also end up on older models. But what about this tradition with the new generation, which closely links many functions with the new in-house tensor chip? In an interview with Android Authority, Google talks about some hurdles that they want to overcome.
“As with all Pixel functions, it is our goal to bring as many as possible to older Pixel devices, if this is technically possible,” said the developers. However, it is emphasized that this process can take “some time”. In addition, with regard to the Pixel 6 functions, users have to be prepared for the fact that they also require a slightly different implementation on other devices.
All features wouldn’t make it
And then, last but not least, you have to admit that with the switch to the in-house chips it is much more difficult to maintain the backward compatibility of the functions than in previous years: “Some technologies will require additional technical investments, such as Live Translate, as our device-specific language models run on the proprietary tensor chip of the Pixel 6”, says Google. A schedule for the delivery of Pixel 6 functions for the Pixel family is not yet to be given.
