Minister for Petroleum Ghulam Sarwar Khan has made an announcement allowing the Sui gas consumers to pay their ever-increasing bills in equal installments.
In order to facilitate the gas consumers who are unable to pay their entire bill in one go, this step has been taken.
Those who received Rs20,000 or above gas bills are allowed to pay it in 4 installments. A directive has been issued to the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) to not to disconnect the gas connections of the consumers, paying in installments.
The Minister accepted that the gas bills have become a burden on the consumers, however, the government is not ready to provide subsidies to the consumers due to financial constraints.
He said that it is not feasible to buy expensive gas and sell it at cheaper rates.
Sarwar claimed, “In 2018, the government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) approved gas supply schemes of Rs55 billion, only to please people and get votes, which was tantamount to pre-poll rigging.”
He said that the PML-N government did not raise the gas prices in its tenure, but PTI is duty bound and it is important to make difficult but right decisions.
About exploration of resources he said, “So far, 3,500-metre-deep drilling has been done out of 5,500 metres. The government is trying to expedite gas exploration as the current gas reserves are racing towards depletion.”
