Five New Berths Will be Added to Gwadar Port

Director General, Planning and Development Gwadar Port Authority Munir Ahmed Jan said that the Gwadar deep-sea port will be further developed. From January 2019 the work on its expansion will begin.

Mr. Ahmed said, “Under the expansion plan, five new berths will be added to existing three berths to handle bigger ships.”

On the recent visit of Munir Jan to Beijing, he attended the CPEC Media Forum. There he revealed that the first phase of the port has been completed which is an essential part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)

He said, “Now, we have entered the second phase, which will ensure 16 meters depth to facilitate bigger ships.”

In answer to a query, he said that for 40 years government has leased Gwadar Port’s expansion & development to China. The Chinese government will establish the Gwadar Port and the free economic zone.

Initially, $48 million were invested by Pakistani and Chinese companies on the port. As for the free economic zone, it will be 923 acres and soon the work on it will begin.

Talking about the construction of the new Gwadar Airport he said, “All the initial work including design and the feasibility study has already been finalized and the groundbreaking is likely to be performed in January.”
