First Hijab-wearing Barbie has released. The Barbie is introduced in order to pay respect to an American fencer who participated in Olympics wearing a headscarf. She was the first US woman to do so.
Ibtihaj Muhammad, her face is modeled on the doll. Last year she won a bronze model in Rio. She says that the doll is a “childhood dream come true”.
The company that creates the doll has faced criticism for making the dolls extremely thin and creating them a symbol of sexuality.
Mattel, the maker of the doll says that now they are planning to introduce dolls modeled on inspirational women. They will release them by next year.
At the Glamour’s Women of the Year summit, the Hijab wearing Barbie Doll was introduced.
Muhammad said, “When I think about my own journey, me being a Muslim girl involved in the sport of fencing, there were people who made me feel like I didn’t belong. For all those people who didn’t believe in me, this Barbie doll is for you.”
When Muhammad was young she used to make hijab out of tissue and wrap it around Barbie dolls so that they could resemble her and her siblings.
Muhammad said that she is hoping that the doll would help girls and encourage them to embrace what makes them unique.”
She further said, “Today I’m proud to know those little girls who wear hijab and, just as powerfully, those who don’t can play with a Barbie who chooses to wear a headscarf. She’s a Barbie who is strong enough to wield a giant sabre and dedicated enough to spend years working her way to an Olympic medal.”
