Federal Board of Revenue is planning to allow duty-free import of mobile phones under the Baggage Rule. The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication were told about it.
Chairman FBR Shabbar Zaidi informed the committee that the recommendation will be put in front of the federal cabinet in the upcoming days. FBR said that the baggage rule is being misused. Due to this the government-imposed taxes instead of providing facilities for mobile phone import.
The mafia used stolen data of international arriving travelers and registered the phones on their names, under the baggage rule. The facility was being misused by registering costly phones on the international passenger’s information, as per FBR.
Rubina Khalid, the Chairman Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication criticized FBR for not blocking the loopholes in the rules and looting people via taxes. These taxes are an issue for the local citizens and a pain in the neck for Pakistanis living in foreign lands.
The revenue board actions were criticized both by the opposition and the Government benches and ministry of IT (MOIIT). The board was asked to revise its taxes.
The committee approved that there should be relief on the import of mobile phones. It was finalized that people will be allowed to import one phone in their baggage.
