The President of the United States Donald Trump should meet the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan as soon as possible to reset the relations of Washington with Islamabad, said the Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
He further said that the meet up of Donald Trump and Imran Khan would be a push for a peaceful settlement in Pakistan’s neighbor country Afghanistan.
The comments came from the US Senator after the efforts by Pakistan to press on with talks between the US and the Taliban aimed to end the 17 years of war in Afghanistan.
“I have seen things change here and all in a positive direction. A meeting with the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, who declared strong support for a peace agreement in Afghanistan, would leave the President of the United States Donald Trump far more enthusiastic about the region than he is today,” Mr Graham said during a news conference in Islamabad.
He further said that with Prime Minister Imran Khan, we have a unique opportunity to change our relationship with Pakistan. “A previously transactional relationship, based on the rewards for services rendered, should be replaced with the ‘strategic engagement’, including a free trade agreement,” he added.
Lindsey Graham is on a trip to Pakistan with Zalmay Khalilzad, a special envoy of the United States for peace in Afghanistan, and other top military commanders.
