Dexamethasone sale has been banned by the government of Punjab without prescription, as per the reports of local media. The steroid drug has been referred to as a significant breakthrough for the treatment of coronavirus.
The chief drug controller has released orders for the drug inspectors to monitor the distribution of the drug throughout the province and to keep a record of the stock of the drug in the province.
These orders are directed at diverting the possible hoarding of the drug.
Previously, the special assistant to PM on National Health Services Dr. Zafar Mirza said that a committee of health experts would be considering the use of the generic steroid drug dexamethasone for the treatment of the critical patients affected by the coronavirus patients in the country.
He tweeted that there have been positive results on the critical patients of COVID-19 treated with the steroid drug. It is welcomed by WHO as a first treatment to the coronavirus patients and has shown to reduce the mortality rate in the patients infected by the virus needing ventilator support.
Dr. Mirza said that it is an old and inexpensive anti-inflammatory drug and that there are many producers of the drug in Pakistan.
