Countrywide polio eradication drive is to start from today. The campaign began a week back in Karachi aiming to vaccinate nearly 39.6 million children. The drive would be involving almost 265,000 polio workers going door-to-door for vaccinating the children under the age of 5 years.
Some days back, the National Institute of Health has given confirmation of 5 more polio cases from KP and Balochistan, bringing the tally for the present year so far to 17. Back in 2019, 144 cases were reported countrywide, 12 in 2018 and 8 cases in 2017.
Dr Zafar Mirza, the Special Assistant to PM on Health said that the making of a successful national drive in December 2019, the country is all set to undergo aggressively for pushing the virus back during 2020, setting the platform for rooting out the poliovirus from the nation once and for all.
He also said that they have critically reviewed their performance during the recent drive and worked with the provincial and district teams for even better preparedness for the to come vaccination efforts.
For taking advantage of a decrease in the temperature throughout the nation as the cold weather makes it hard for the virus to survive, the polio eradication programme scheduled 3 back-to-back national campaigns during the months of December, April and February with two extra rounds in the high-risk districts during the months of January and March.
The EOC is also positioning 50 professionals as facilitators across the critical areas of the nation to support anti-polio drive workers to administer 2 drops of oral polio vaccine to every child during the February national drive.
