Sardar Usman Buzdar—the Punjab Chief Minister inaugurated the hydropower project near Head Marala on Monday.
The chief minister said that the government was trying its best to control the energy crisis.
He also said that the PTI government was actively focusing on the making and promotion of wind and solar energy for meeting the energy requirements of the nation. He further said that the production of cheaper energy was the topmost priority of the government.
While briefing the CM, the Punjab Minister for Energy—Dr Akhtar Malik said that the hydropower project had been formed in the Upper Chenab Canal (UCC) near Head Marala Barrage over the Chenab River at a cost of Rs 3.98 billion under the supervision of the Chinese engineers.
Aamir Jaan—the Punjab Secretary Energy said that the hydropower plant had a total potential of generating 7.64 megawatts electricity with four turbines of 1.9 megawatts capacity each, which were made operational recently after successful tests were conducted under the mutual supervision of Pakistani and Chinese engineers.
The power plant is connected with the national grid via the 1.5km 11,000kilowatts main transmission line. It would be producing 50.3 million units per year.
Akhtar Malik said that the promotion of wind and solar energy has now become the most important thing to overcome the energy crisis in the nation. He said that the earlier governments did not do anything practically for ending the energy crisis, which has severely affected the industrial sector and the national economy.
He also said that the earlier government just made costly plans however they remained unsuccessful in focusing on the production and promotion of wind and solar energy.
He added that it was the need of the day that both the Diamer and Bhasha dams be built on utmost preference for diverting the water crisis in the coming years.
The chief minister on the occasion also announced the early repairing of the Sialkot-Head Marala Road and rundown the Sialkot-Pasrur Road.
He also made an announcement for the early formation of Special Economic Zone along with the Sialkot Lahore Motorway for giving better industrial and trade facilities for bringing industrial revolution in Punjab.
