China to Send Ducks to Assist Pakistan in Fighting Against Locust Infestation

Locust Infestation

As per the reports of a local Chinese newspaper, China is considering to send a 100,000 strong army of ducks to assist Pakistan to fight against the locust infestation.

The locust-eating waterfowl would be sent from the eastern province of Zhejiang after the earlier dispatch of a team of the Chinese experts to Pakistan advising on a response to the infestation that is being called the worst in 20 years, as per the reports of Ningbo Evening News.

China would be sending ducks, whose natural diet consists of insects, to combat a same infestation in its northwestern region of Xinjiang 2 decades back, as per reports with considerable effectiveness. The use of these ducks is less costly and less environmentally destroying than the use of pesticides, the paper cited Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Agricultural Technology researcher Lu Lizhi as saying.

Lu said that the ducks are also more suited for the task than other poultry animals like chickens.

He added that ducks like to stay in a group, so they are easier to manage than chickens. He also said that a duck is also capable of eating more than two hundred locusts on a per-day basis in comparison to a chicken, which only eats 70 locusts in a day. Lu further added that these ducks have three-times combating capability.

Pakistan was invaded by the locust swarm back in 2019, which extended to lay waste to the nation’s cotton drop and is now destroying the wheat harvest.
