China is to develop military bases in Pakistan and all over the world in its plan to carry out its global infrastructure program, Belt & Road initiative. This is claimed by the US Defense Department.
The annual report of the Pentagon to Congress on Chinese military and security developments stated that currently, China has a single overseas military base in Djibouti. But it claims that it will set up other bases most probably in Pakistan, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the western Pacific.
In the report, Pentagon said, “China’s advancement of projects such as the ‘One Belt, One Road’ Initiative (OBOR) will probably drive military overseas basing through a perceived need to provide security for OBOR projects.”
Adding, “China will seek to establish additional military bases in countries with which it has a longstanding friendly relationship and similar strategic interests, such as Pakistan, and in which there is a precedent for hosting foreign militaries.”
Pentagon has admitted that this might not be possible as other countries may not allow the presence of the People’s Liberation Army. The report claimed that the Chinese activities in the region can lead to their enhanced military presence in the region.
