China has closed down the US consulate in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. According to the BBC News, tensions between China and the United States have escalated, with China closing the US consulate in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in response to the US closure of the Chinese embassy in Houston. China retaliates a similar way the US does which could lead to further conflicts in the future.
China had given US diplomats 72 hours to evacuate the consulate, after which the consulate was evacuated and the American flag was taken down from the building. Chinese officials later stormed the US consulate in Chengdu and took control of the building.
China has not given a reason for the closure of the US consulate in Chengdu. Meanwhile, a US State Department spokesman described the Chinese move as “surprising” and said that the US Consulate in Chengdu had played a key role in relations between the two countries for 35 years.
