China to stop production of more than 500 car models and versions of the model that are not according to its fuel economy standards, Chinese automakers confirm on Tuesday.
China took this step to reduce emissions in the largest auto market in the world. “The suspension, effective January 1, would impose on both domestic carmakers and foreign joint ventures,” said the government-affiliated China Vehicle Technology Service Center.
The decision was expected to affect a small share of car production in the country, in 2016, 28 million vehicles were manufactured.
There are dozens of small-scale automakers are currently working in China – some are producing just a hundred cars a year. Different model versions – like a dissimilar combination of an engine and transmission are constantly being deregistered by the authorities.
