Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) said in a report that polluted bottled water is being sold in the market in spite of efforts made to provide safe drinking water.
The council working on the report has been asked to not just monitor contaminating mineral water bottles but also publicizes the results.
77 samples were taken in between April-June from various areas of the country including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Peshawar, Gilgit, Multan, Lahore, Bahawalpur, Tandojam, and Karachi.
The brands found unclean to drink include New Premier, Natural Pure Water, Livon, Fresh Life, Al-Shalal, Aqua Gen, Vey, Smart Mineral Water, Al-Sahar, Douro and Do Aab
New Premier and Natural Pure have an increased level of arsenic compared to other brands. It ranges from 12 and 23 parts per billion.
The diseases high level of arsenic cause include skin diseases, diabetes, kidney diseases, hypertension, heart diseases, birth defects, black foot diseases and various kinds of cancers.
Fresh Life, Al-Shalal, Aqua Gen, Vey, Smart Mineral Water, Al-Sahar, Douro and Do Aab Water had contaminated water due to microbiological contamination which results in the cause of cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, and typhoid, along with similar other diseases.
High level of sodium was found in New Premier and Livon which ranged between 61 and 66ppb while the standard is 50ppm.
Most of the water brands mentioned above are sold in the market under various names as per an official from PCRWR.
Also, the official gave emphasis that law should be enforced and the businesses of these water brands need to be closed
