Ban on Suicidal Games ‘Momo Challenge and Blue Whale’ in Pakistan

Information Technology Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool has announced a ban on suicidal games in Pakistan. Momo Challenge and Blue Whale games are compelling youngsters to inflict self-harm. In extreme cases, it has also led individuals to commit suicide.

Dr. Khalid Maqbool  said, “These games don’t have any place in Pakistan as they are destroying the youth and are one of the key players in suicides taking place worldwide.”

He clearly stated that the Cyber Crime Division of Pakistan will take severe action against those who develop and spread such games.

It is pertinent to mention here that there is no app on the App store that is used to access such games. They are spread through WhatsApp messages. Teenagers are lured to perform the challenges through WhatsApp. So it seems unclear how the government will ban the game that is spread through WhatsApp. WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted and does not share data with third parties.

A Russian initiated the Blue Whale Challenge that has since then spread across continents and claimed lives of people in Pakistan, India and other nations. It is important that parents, friends, teachers keep a check on students who seem in an unusual mood. It is essential that the problem is addressed before it gets out of hand.
