On Tuesday, the Cabinet Division has placed a ban on the domestic child labor in the federal capital via a notification.
Dr. Shireen Mazari, the Federal Minister for Human Rights stated in a tweet that the cabinet decision has been imposed finally via the Gazette notification. It also added that the Child Domestic Labour is forbidden under the 1991 Child Employment Act valid for the Islamabad Capital Territory. She further maintained that the provinces could adopt via a simple provincial assembly resolution in a similar way and it is the first time that the child domestic labor is banned in the country.
The minister had been urging to include the domestic labor by children as a dangerous line of work in the act. She further said that the absence of the law to protect the domestic workers would be the fastest way to provide protection to the children.
Dr. Shireen Mazari urged for the amendment after an 8 year old domestic househelp was beaten to death by her employer in Islamabad.
The Employment of Children Act 1991 bars to employ the children who are under 14 years of age in dangerous and unsafe environments like mines, factories and the carpet industries.
