Asad Umar, the Planning Minister has said that there has been a slowdown in the spread of the novel coronavirus. He also said that the rise in cases is because of the higher testing capacity in Pakistan that has led to the discovery of more cases.
Asad Umar further said that the spread of the coronavirus itself has decreased in the country over the span of the last ten to twelve days however the testing capacity has surged up, hence indicating the rise in the number of cases.
He indicated that earlier 2,500 to 3,000 tests were being performed in the country on a daily basis, however, now the number has surged to 6,000 to 7,000.
The minister also said that the country had still got limited testing capacity in comparison to the rest of the world and that they are performing the tests on a limited basis.
He said that while the patients’ number that needs ventilators is surging, the number of ventilators in Pakistan is also to increase soon to nearly 2,000 by the month of May.
He further added that the number of cases, in reality, are much higher than the ones that have surfaced. He said that there are many cases that are asymptomatic.
Asad Umar also said that the government initiated smart lockdown, will commence from Monday, however, people should ensure to practice social distancing while they make their purchases.
