A Pakistani Leaked Snapchat Source Code Online

A Pakistani is being alleged for leaking and uploading Snapchat’s source code online on Github (Microsoft-owned development platform). Snapchat’s parent company Snap has taken action after its source code leaked online illegally. Initially, the source code was uploaded online on Github but was taken down after a DMCA takedown notice by Snap was issued.

The hacker who leaked the source online calls himself ‘i5xx’. He claimed that the code was leaked but he did not identify the source of the leak. So the hackers account was investigated and it came to light that he is from Tango Bado, a village in Pakistan.

A source code is the main component of a program that is made by a programmer. Even though every day thousands of DMCA notices are issued regarding illegal sharing of movies, songs, and games, this is something new as a popular social media company has approached DMCA.

Snap has filed a notice against the unauthorized publication and distribution of its source code.

To the question “Please provide a detailed description of the original copyrighted work that has allegedly been infringed. If possible, include a URL to where it is posted online.”

Snap representative replied,“SNAPCHAT SOURCE CODE. IT WAS LEAKED AND A USER HAS PUT IT IN THIS GITHUB REPO. THERE IS NO URL TO POINT TO BECAUSE SNAP INC. DOESN’T PUBLISH IT PUBLICLY.”

According to some tweets on a Twitter account which is believed to be of i5xx, the hacker tried to contact Snapchat but failed.

“The problem we tried to communicate with you but did not succeed In that we decided [sic] Deploy source code.

Adding, I will post it again until you reply :).”
