70% of Loose Milk Sold in Punjab is Poisonous

A report submitted by the provincial authorities to Prime Minister Imran Khan revealed that 70% loose milk that is sold in urban Punjab is poisonous for consumption. It contains harmful chemicals and bacteria, unfit for consumption.

601 samples of loose milk was collected from different cities of Punjab including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi. After testing, out of these 422 were found unfit for consumption.

They contained different traces of chemicals that included formaldehyde, ammonium sulphate, hydrogen peroxide, urea etc.

It is pertinent to mention here that Formaldehyde particularly can cause stomach and heart problems and can even lead to blindness.

Furthermore, the water that is added to milk to increase its volume also contain traces of germs and bacteria that includes coliforms.

A report was presented to PM Khan in which it was disclosed that the ‘adulteration mafia’ is selling artificial powdered milk that is smuggled via Iran. The aim is to meet the growing demand for milk in cities.

The report stated that the mafia prepares the milk via a laundry washing machine to mix the powder. Even though this artificial milk cost is Rs18 per kg, but it is sold for Rs45 per kg to wholesalers. Then for the customers the price is further increased to Rs75 per kg for consumers.
