5 bottled water brands were declared unsafe for human consumption by Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources. From April to June almost 85 mineral and bottled water brands samples were taken from all over Pakistan. Samples were taken from different cities including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Bahawalpur, and Tandojam.
The samples were tested and the analytical findings were compared within the permissible limits of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority. The results came and it was found that five bottled water brands are unfit for drinking. These five brands are Gourmet, Aqua Super Life, Shiraz, Aqua Splash and Marina. Microbiological contamination was found in these brands thus they were declared unsafe.
The contamination found in the above mentioned 5 brands can lead to diseases like cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, typhoid and others infectious illnesses. As pure drinking water is not available all over Pakistan, people are compelled to buy bottled water. Especially those who travel have no other option except to buy bottled water from various markets. Due to this these water brands are widely manufactured, and sold in the market. PCRWR has issued a warning to many mineral water brands that have been selling contaminated water to the Pakistani consumers.
Also, the Ministry of Science and Technology has ordered the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources to monitor bottled mineral water brands and then announce the results publically so that the people remain aware. They know which bottled water brands are unsafe for human consumption so that they can avoid using them.
