18 Years, Declared the Minimum Legal Age of Marriage – Senate Standing Committee

18 years has been declared the minimum legal age of marriage as set by the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights. In a meeting presided by the Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokar, the adulthood age was declared 18 years.

Senator Usman Kakar said that the death rate has increased primarily due to underage marriages. He added that the ID card requirement age is 18 years and so this should be the age set for marriage of men and women as well.

Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari said that the government is also fine with the recommendation of setting the minimum marriage limit as 18 years.

Next month the draft bill will be presented in the parliament. It will be debated in the parliament in February. Then the cabinet will finally approve or disapprove it.

Furthermore the HR Minister said that against the Sharia Law no legislation will take place. Further stating that male and female rights will be protected.
