The Supreme Court of Pakistan SCP has served notices to one hundred and forty-seven government officials serving in grade 17 and above for hiding their dual nationality.
Earlier the Suo Motu notice was taken by the SCP regarding dual nationality, the government officers at higher ranks in the departments should not conceal their dual nationality and the bureaucrats should not be dual nationals at the first place. The FIA conducted the investigation and submitted the report to SCP, Bashir Memon submitted the report on the nationality of Bureaucrats on behalf of FIA.
Earlier, the apex court ordered that legal action would be taken against the officials hiding their dual nationality, the top court also served notices to 291 government officials whose spouses hold dual nationalities. The top court gave two further weeks to DG FIA to submit the details of dual nationals in the government departments. The top court also ordered attorney general of Pakistan to assist the court regarding the dual nationality cases.
In a court hearing, DG FIA Bashir Memon revealed that 147 officers are found that have deliberately withheld their dual nationality and seven of them have said that they do not have any dual nationality but actually they were foreign nationals.
According to the report prepared by FIA, 23 of the officers out of 147 belong to the Aviation Division who have concealed their dual nationality. Aviation Division is a subsidiary of Ministry of Defence, these 23 officers have mostly foreign nationals of UK and Canada.
Similarly, 3 dual nationals were the employees of Maritime Affairs and one each in Defence Production and Foreign Affairs Division while other officers were working in different departments of Punjab and KP the DG FIA said.
FIA collaborate with National Database and Registration Authority NADRA and Integrated Border Management System IBMS in order to gather data about the government officers and foreign nationals, they collected the data of 144,884 government officers to conduct the investigation.
In the report, it is revealed that 616 officers have voluntarily declared their dual nationality while spouses of 691 officers possess dual nationality. However, six of the officers declared that they were foreign nationals while they were not.
“It was made clear that people who have so far concealed their dual nationality for any reason should declare it within 10 days, no strict action would be taken against them,” the court ruled.
