Sania Nishtar—a Special Assistant to PM on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation revealed that under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), launched by the government of PPP in July 2008, nearly 140,000 employees of the government had been receiving welfare payments.
While talking to the media in Islamabad, SAPM said that the employees of several government departments including Pakistan Railways, Pakistan Post, and Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Services had been made part of the income support program.
Special Assistant Sania Nishtar further said that the beneficiaries of the program were present on both provincial and federal levels.
The Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) had been launched in June 2008 by the government of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to provide the welfare funds to the deserving poor people living across the country.
Earlier this month, the PTI-led federal government of Pakistan had decided to take action against the government employees benefiting monetarily from the income support programme.
It is worth mentioning here that according to the official data, as many as 2,543 government officials from grade 17 to 21 were mentioned as beneficiaries under the welfare scheme.
